In honor of the 50th anniversary of de-decriminalizing same-sex relationships in Norway, Posten released their cleverly titled “When Harry Met Santa”.
Posten, Norway’s state-owned postal service, released their nearly 4-minute long ad in November 2021. The ad starts with Harry spotting Santa one fine Christmas delivering presents, and there is an instant connection. Their bond grows stronger every Christmas, but the limited time they spend together satiates none.
To clear time off of his busy timetable, Santa signs up for Norway’s Posten, helping him deliver presents faster. In the end, the two share a passionate and intimate kiss. As the camera zooms out of Harry’s window, it perfectly ends with
“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
From: All of us
To: All of us.”
Clearly a play on “When Harry Met Sally”, the ad successfully portrays how same-sex relationships are as beautiful as ‘conventional’ relationships are. The ad also shows who Harry is beyond his sexuality. The advertisement is incredibly nuanced, capturing his mental state, insecurities, and bond with kin.
Same-sex marriage has been legalized in Norway since 1st January 2009, when gender-neutral marriage legislation was enacted by the Storting in June 2008. Hence, Norway became the 6th country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. It’s only been a few years since we have been able to speak about the LGBTQ community. But we can only bring acceptance and respect as a tight-knit community with constant effort. This ad is an example of exactly that. We globally have a long way to go but are fortunately at a good place.
The Holidays have always been a romantic season, so why not celebrate it the way it’s supposed to be. After all, “love is love.”
